PMDD - Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

What is PMDD?

Severe and chronic medical condition (often referred to as extremely severe PMS) that usually starts 7-10 days before a woman's period begins and continues throughout the course of a woman's period

Classed as a reproductive health disorder, as well as a mental health disorder due to both physically and mentally debilitating symptoms

Causes/risk factors:

Not enough research on the disorder to identify specific causes or risk factors

Assumed to be a sensitivity to normal hormonal fluctuations that occur during the menstrual cycle, specifically those within the luteal phase (post-ovulation) and is considered linked to serotonin deficiency

Prevalence:

Affects up to 3-8% of women of reproductive age
